Adult fiction can waffle. YA authors don’t always have that luxury. I forgot which of the ladies in the panel said this (I think it was Sally Gardner) but it went along the lines of:

“From the very first page, you have to hold on tight to your reader and run.”

I think that pretty much sums up why YA books are such page-turners and one of the main factors that affect how I react a book. Let’s just do it. Let’s get this story chugging.
